EyeHateGod — Southern Discomfort (2000)

For the past several months, I was reasonably sure that this New Orleans-based sludgecore outfit was dead and buried. «Southern Discomfort» seemed an appropriate swan song, with its nine songs comprised mostly of outtakes and old 7″ versions of tracks that later appeared on 1996’s «Dopesick». After doing some research on the web, I am more than a little confused. A number of fan sites seem to imply that we can expect more feedback-drenched dirges from these reigning kings of cacophony. If that’s not enough, it seems that EyeHateGod are touring Europe as we speak. Whatever state of death or decomposition they are presently in, «Southern Discomfort» is an excellent testament to the aural havoc that was created when five sociopaths (including Jimmy Bower of Crowbar fame, and metal journalist Michael D. Williams) decided to musically interpret a sick world of white-trash violence as perceived through the blurred senses of a drunk heroin addict. It is a disturbing union of caterwauling sludge and down-tuned southern rock madness that ideally represents a proud legacy of pain and suffering. Of particular interest is the instrumental «Dope Sick Jam», which was taken from the sessions that produced the album of the same title. It would be rather tedious to break this track down, but where words fail me, the music speaks volumes. Only the most adventurous of dirge-core mavens need enter here!
