Hecate Enthroned — Kings of Chaos (2000)
If I hear one more person write this band off as a Cradle of Filth clone, I’m bound to go ballistic! Perhaps Hecate Enthroned’s debut album (»Upon Promethean Shores») warranted such an accusation, but since 1998’s «Dark Requiems and Unsilent Massacre», this band has progressively distanced themselves from Dani Filth and Co. Where «Dark Requiems…» was a cacophonous speed-fest that owed more to Emperor than the aforementioned CoF, «Kings of Chaos» is a more varied and diverse effort. Merely calling this a «black metal» album would be an injustice, as several styles (ranging from death metal to experimental synth music) find their way into the mix. Tunes such as «Perjurer» and «Deceiving The Deceiver» feature blazing riffs that show some Swedish influence creeping into the repertoire, while «Conquest Complete» and «The Downfall» stay strictly in black metal territory. Then there’s «Exalted In Depravity», which features the aforementioned synth pulses and a cool, eerie ambience. In closing, «Kings of Chaos» is well worth checking out, so long as you check your biases at the door before indulging.
