Hellnation — Fucked Up Mess (1999)
My first exposure to Hellnation was 1997’s «Your Chaos Days Are Numbered». At 37 tracks, and about as many minutes in length, I was fully expecting a mind-numbing blur of incoherent grindcore. I was somewhat surprised when I actually gave it a spin on the turntable, as the songs came across more as hyper-speed punk than all-out grind. «Fucked Up Mess» continues this fine tradition, this time with only (!) 24 tracks of similar, yet slightly more refined material. The riffs are more discernible, and song structure seems a bit more prevalent than in the past. While blast beats will forever be their focus, it is difficult to get bored with a band that plays with such reckless abandon. I find it difficult to recommend Hellnation to any single group of fans, as punks will find them too grind-ish, and grind freaks will find them too punk-ish. In the end, the members of Hellnation will probably laugh at our attempts to categorize them, and perhaps that is what makes their music oddly attractive to me.
