In Flames — Colony (1999)

In Flames must enter the studio with the highest ambitions when it comes time to release another album. It all starts with guitarist Jesper Stromblad’s lead breaks, which can often be sung as if they are songs unto themselves. Next comes the aggressive vocal attack of Anders Friden, who perfectly counters Stromblad’s melodies with an equal dose of vicious bellowing. Beyond Friden, things seem to drop off a bit. The rhythm section is generally straight-forward and unmemorable, giving Jesper the burden of keeping things interesting without becoming self-indulgent. This is quite a formidable task, but one which he seems to handle quite well. «Colony» contains great melodies, addictive hooks, and certain tracks (i.e. «Embody The Invisible») that just transcend words. However, the sheer magnitude of these bright spots is often underplayed by what remains. I really do like this disc, but with it being their fourth full length release, you would think they could have refined things a bit over the years. A perfect example can be found in the later tracks on «Colony». Each song starts out with the best of intentions, then mutates into something that is forgotten as soon as it fades out. It is clear that these guys can write killer riffs that hang on the brain like an empty bottle of Johnny Walker Red at 6:00 am on a Monday morning. Their downfall is in their (apparent) inability to be consistent. In the meantime, I will continue buying each new In Flames album, in hope that they will one day put together a disc that is memorable and challenging from beginning to end.
