NOFX — The Decline (1999)

What can I say about a veteran punk rock band that releases an eighteen-minute single?

Never content to stay within an established framework, NOFX have once again spit in the face of punk politics with «The Decline». This is as close as anyone will ever get to «epic punk», and it actually works. I was initially apprehensive about this, because I figured it would be a bunch of loosely assembled songs, all amalgamated into a single track. This is not the case, as NOFX manage to make very smooth transitions from one section to the next, without ever making it obvious that they have done so. Musically, this has a definite SoCal hardcore vibe to it, but several sections are slower and more moody than in previous efforts. That’s not to say that NOFX are strangers to such territory, but they pull it off here with a sarcastic flair that may possibly redefine the genre. I can’t wait to see how this one goes over with the whole «punker than fuck» crowd (a group of people whom NOFX has slagged more than once in their lyrics), but I will definitely enjoy it in the meantime.
