Conquering The World (Interview with Behemoth)

Behemoth is the band that doesn’t require any special introductions. Hailing from Poland, they were born as a classic guitar-driven black metal band which slowly gathered strength and gained world-wide recognition with «Grom», released in 1996. After proving that the band can play black metal on par with the genre’s maestros, Behemoth slowly started to transform into a death metal beast, releasing one strong album after another. «Pandemonic Incantations» was followed by «Satanica», ungodly brutal yet melodic death metal masterpiece, showing not much black metal roots, but opting for Slayeresque thrash riffs based on a flesh-ripping brutal death metal percussion instead. While «tr00» black metal kids went apeshit, all other fans of extreme music embraced the change with utmost joy. «Satanica» was rightfully hailed as one of the best extreme music albums issued in 1999, and everybody was waiting for the next album. Some people hoped that the beast will return to its black metal roots, some were eager to witness more brutality. Behemoth returned in the late 2000 with its new antireligious anthem entitled «Thelema.6» which turned to be more death metal and more brutal than ever. Thus the transformation was somewhat complete and I gladly used my chance to interview the mastermind behind the beast, lurking under the name «Nergal». To my amusement the interview turned out to be rather strange. Judge by yourselves:

How do you think, what music plays the band which name is Meatlocker 7? Goregrind? No way. Brutal death metal? Nope. Hardcore? Don’t think so. Mike Selman, lead guitarist of the band, provides some interesting information on the group, including absolutely amusing story about the origin of the name «Meatlocker 7», some thoughts on crossover styles in today’s extreme music, and other worth-while things. Fasten your seatbelts, read on and don’t forget to thank Steve a.k. . Mr. Hell, another Meatlocker 7 inhabitant who handles the bass-guitar, for his invaluable help with this interview!

Waxing Informative — An Interview With New York’s Hollow Ground (Interview with Hollow Ground)

I should have warned them before hand.

Band members Dan and Matt (drummer, and vocalist/guitarist, respectively) recently undertook one of our more «experimental» Q & A sessions. What started out as a fairly serious and straight-forward discussion on Hollow Ground’s history, music, and ethical views, quickly devolved into a contest of wits, and I am largely responsible. Andy and I tried like hell to trip these guys up with a short series of trivial (if not asinine) questions, but each was handled with the utmost confidence by both interviewees. As a result of this ill-fated project, I have arrived at a sobering conclusion: a writing gig with The Grimoire of Exalted Deeds (www.thegrimoire.com) is still far out of reach.

A Work In Progress — Some Thoughts From Circle Of Dead Children’s Jason Andrews (Interview with Circle Of Dead Children)

Their name evokes images which could easily offend one’s sensibilities. But to become offended without first investigating the source would be a blatant sign of ignorance. I recently had the opportunity to perform such an investigation, and having been awe-struck by CODC’s latest platter (entitled «The Genocide Machine»), I needed little convincing. Guitarist Jason Andrews was the prime mover in making this interview a reality, and it still amazes me that it came together from my short Guestbook entry on their website. Jason provided some very informative responses to our questions, and I’m sure his vigilant attitude toward supporting the underground will be appreciated by all who devote large amounts of time, effort, and money to keep it alive.

Peerless Martyrs — A Discourse With Brazil’s Are You God? (Interview with Are You God?)

Shamelessly describing themselves as «La Bomba», Sao Paulo’s Are You God? have clearly opted to spit in the face of subtlety. As will be revealed in the ensuing interview, the band thrives on conflict and individuality, and they don’t seem particularly bothered by the fact that such outspokenness might put them at odds with certain factions of the underground. As I came across the term «free-style deathgrind» in their bio, it struck me as a very apt description for AYG’s characteristic sound. Incorporating such influences as Terrorizer, Napalm Death, and Soilent Green with somewhat «liberal» song structures, AYG allow themselves the space to create musical themes which are amazingly focused and non-derivative. Bassist Bernardo, drummer Carlos, guitarist Fabio, and guitarist/vocalist Joao recently devoted some of their time to discuss whatever topics I threw at them, thus proving to be very honest and well-spoken. Whether arguing the merits of latter-day Napalm Death albums, pondering the threat of organized religion, or considering the possibility of subliminal D.R.I. influence, the fine men of Are You God? made this interview a memorable affair.

Seas of Harrow: A Look Inside the Mind of Fleshgrind’s Steve Murray (Interview with Fleshgrind)

Today, we continue our foray into the extreme metal scene of the Chicago area as Fleshgrind’s Steve Murray provides us with some insight regarding the band’s history, and their development into the highly-respected death-grind juggernaut they are today. Personnel changes, shifting lyrical concepts, and the decision to obtain a grittier sound for their latest effort («The Seeds of Abysmal Torment») were just a few of the topics which Steve agreed to discuss, making this interview a pleasure to conduct. And if you need any more convincing in regards to the brutality, speed, and technical flair of Fleshgrind’s music, consider that Cephalic Carnage deemed them worthy of mention in the lyrics to the song «Eradicate Authority» from the latter’s «Exploiting Dysfunction» CD. Without further ado, here are the goods:

Intense Hammer Rage: The Tasmanian Terror Team Persevere (Interview with Intense Hammer Rage)

While true innovators within the grind-core genre are few and far between, those who strike out from the homogenized ocean of copped riffs and gory lyrics will tell you that adversity is a given. Being unique has its personal merits, but unfortunately, it carries more than its weight in consequences. In the case of Tasmania’s Intense Hammer Rage, applying the term «adversity» to their current predicament is a bit of an understatement. As reported here on Deluge, the Australian authorities recently raided I.H.R. headquarters, confiscating large numbers of posters, CDs, artwork, and even bassist/vocalist Chris’ personal computer. Rather than making a lame attempt at covering all the controversy over the group’s latest CD (entitled «Avagoyamugs»), along with a more standard Q&A session, I will turn the forum over to Chris himself, who was kind enough to speak with us on a variety of I.H.R.-related topics. Be it double-amped guitars, suppression of free speech, or South Park, Chris truly went above and beyond to answer all of our questions. In spite of all the bullshit he has had to endure over the past several months (along with drummer A.B. and guitarist Ricey), Chris has somehow retained his characteristic wit, which ensured the success of our discussion.

Relentless Musical War (Interview with Origin)

«On July 4th, 1997, Paul Ryan and Jeremy Turner, acquaintances through mutual friends, had a conversation that would change their lives. Shortly thereafter, the two guitarists/vocalists got together and started jamming with the intent to create a band embodying blistering speed, total brutality, technical proficiency, and the utmost in quality musicianship. In October of ’97, they convinced longtime friend Clint Appelhanz to put down his guitar, pick up a bass and join the two. Coincidentally, Paul was also good friends with vocalist Mark Manning, who possessed an unbelievably monstrous voice of unmatched ferocity. After hearing the damage the existing members had rendered, Mark aligned himself with the nascent group. In January of ’98, the quartet found drummer George Fluke, who enabled the artists to push the boundaries of their music even further. Finally, after deciding on a moniker that best represented their vision, the unearthly entity known as ORIGIN was created.

Nothing Quiet On the Mid-Western Front: A Discourse with Jungle Rot’s Kevin Forsythe (Interview with Jungle Rot)

With bands such as Cryptopsy and Nile gaining worldwide acclaim over the past couple of years, one might assume that today’s death metal fans won’t tolerate anything short of technical overkill. Not surprisingly, the number of bands playing this brutal, yet intricate style has risen proportionally. What has resulted is a scene that is rather saturated at the moment.

Lamentations of the Flame Princess попытался взять у басиста In Flames Питера Иверса.
